TRIM AND CUT FELLED TREES

CHAINSAW

If you are a forestry worker, chainsaw operator, forest harvester, harvesting technician or arboriculture worker, where the production of timber is not the primary focus of the activity, then this course is right for you.

Participants undertaking this training will develop the skills and knowledge and most importantly the confidence required to safely trim and cut felled trees with a chainsaw and complete operator maintenance.

This includes safely and efficiently using a chainsaw to trim and cut hardwood or softwood trees, delimb trees, trim branches, trim burls and other small growths. Participants will also learn to use specific cutting techniques and working in varied weather conditions.

Important information prior to enrolment
+ COURSE DELIVERY
This course will be delivered in the workplace or Third party facility.

+ ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Participants must have the capacity to undertake the physical requirements of the course, for example be able to use chainsaw to trim and cut trees and complete equipment maintenance.
And have reading and writing skills for routine calculations, reporting on size, length and diameter of cut trees, following instructions and recording in fault logs etc.
+ COURSE DURATION
Face to Face – 14 hours (minimum) full face to face course
Refresher training – 7 hours (minimum) face to face course – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates.
+ ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks. These are detailed in the sections following.

+ CERTIFICATE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS
No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

+ COURSE FEES AND PAYMENTS

Payment Terms – Payment for individual participants is upfront, group booking payment terms are based on agreement between the client and service provider.

+ ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES
Performance tasks –
Emergency and safety equipment – select, inspect, check, report and maintain
Personal protective equipment – select, inspect, check, report and use
Tools and equipment – select, inspect, check, report and maintain
Chainsaw and components – select, inspect, check, report and maintain:
sharpening and fitting spare chain and tension chain
inspection, identification and replacement of bar, chain, drive sprockets
refuelling, bar oil checks and top up
air filter, check, clean and replacement
cleaning of saw body, air intake vents and cooling fans
Practical scenarios – Assess, plan and conduct activities for trimming and cutting on 3 separate/different trees in varied weather conditions including:
delimb trees, trim branches, trim burls and other small growths using:
bridging cuts, swinging cuts, side bind cuts, boring, wedge cut and ripping cuts
Documentation – Completion of an equipment maintenance and fault log, relative to equipment used for practical tasks and scenarios.
Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
